The Life and Times of Charity Phillips (1822 – 1887)

Charity was born on 5 Feb 1822 in Alabama, likely in Shelby County. It appears that she remained unmarried for her entire life, moving with her mother Sarah to Warren County, Tennessee.

Alabama Records

Charity lives with her father William and mother Sarah her entire life. We see her in 1830 and 1840 as marks – she was 8 (or female 5 to 10) in 1830 and 18 (female 15 to 20) in 1840

The first record with her name listed is in 1850. She is listed as 25, possibly trying to shave off some years, but she is also noted as being above 20 years old and unable to read or write. The family is renting farm land in Blount county, Alabama.

It appears that William died sometime between 1860 and 1869 – the girls decided to move off to Warren County, Tennessee. Charity is living with her mom “Sally” (Sarah), and her sisters Elizabeth and Milly (Milberry). The head of household is a Charity Barnes, and her child Eliza. Charity Barnes has property tied to her name, and it looks like everyone is living in the same house. Further research will need to be done on Charity Barnes’ family – lore states that she was born Charity Phillips, and would be about the right age to be William’s sister.

The last record associated with Charity is the 1880 Census. It appears that Charity Barnes has passed away, as has Sara Phillips. Charity is living with her cousin Eliza Barnes and her sister Elizabeth Phillips. Milberry Phillips is living next door with her husband Enoch Saffley.
